Free Youcef Nadarkhani

My friend is running an event on Google+ for pastor Youcef Nadarkhani:

Iranian Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani has been wrongly imprisoned for the simple reason that he has chosen to be a follower of Christ. He has been falsely accused with protesting, rape, extortion, and, according to the Provincial Political/Security Deputy Governor, security crimes as a Zionist. He has been sentenced to death already, but he now has a court date of September 8. You can read more about the many inhumane injustices that happen to him and many like him, whether political or religious prisoners, all over the world.Join me, please on September 1st, 2012 in sharing the following hashtag:#freeyoucefnadarkhani  Put it at the end of all your comments, no matter how irrelevant. Invite all your friends to this event.  Show the Iranian government that somebody cares about what they do to people. God bless you!

Tazonea Progress

Hello readers! I know I haven't published anything here for months, but I'm back at least for now. The fact is, November is coming up, and November is NaNoWriMo.

People who have been following my blog know that last year, I participated in NaNoWriMo. I'm going to do the same this year. But, the thing is, I'm still finishing the third draft of last year's book. I thought I would give a brief progress update.

For starters, here's a comparison of each draft's quality in excerpt form. The excerpt itself is quite absurd, but so is the book. Here goes:

Draft 1:

“Siddown, siddown.” Said the woman, Mrs. Grunk. She was chairwoman of Tazonea, and her mannerisms were legendary amongst the rangers. Her voice sounded somewhat like a screeching violin, only scratchier, like it was being ground out from some voice factory. Ranger no.1 sat down at Mrs. Grunk's desk. Various knick knacks were scattered about. Models of the zoo's various oddities. Souvenirs, bobble heads, and other various trinkets. There were also books stacked like high rise apartments, and pages scatter every which way.

Mrs. Grunk swept it all away, and it fell crashing to floor. She put down a pot and cup in front of Ranger no.1. The stench of cactus grew even stronger. It was sour and repungent. Mrs. Grunk leaned forward to pour him a cup, her piles of short and curly red hair bobbed about like the folds of fat which covered every inch of her short, stout body.

Draft 2:

“Siddown, siddown.” said Mrs. Grunk. She was the chairwoman of Tazonea, and her mannerisms were legendary amongst the rangers. Her voice sounded somewhat like a screeching violin, only more abrasive, as if it were being pulled through an antique coffee grinder. Ranger no.1 pulled out a chair, and sat down at her desk. Various knick knacks were scattered all over its surface. There were models of the various oddities from Tazonea. Souvenirs bobble heads, and other kinds of trinkets. Obscuring Ranger no.1’s view of Mrs. Grunk’s face were stacks of books and pages and maps stacked chaotically together in lopsided fashion.

Mrs. Grunk reached her arms through the mess, and swept it all sideways. The city of books fell with a terrific crash to the ground, and pages flew everywhere. Not seeming to think a thing of it, Mrs. Grunk put down a teapot in front of Ranger no.1, and quickly followed it up with a little teacup. The stench of cactus grew even stronger. It was sour and repugnant. Mrs. Grunk leaned forward to pour the teapot. Her piles of short and curly red hair bobbed about like the folds of fat which covered every inch of her short, stout body.

Draft 3:

“Siddown, siddown.” said Mrs. Grunk, gesturing to a chair in front of her desk. She was the chairwoman of Tazonea, and her mannerisms were legendary amongst the rangers. Her voice sounded somewhat like a screeching violin, only more abrasive, as if it were being pulled through an antique coffee grinder.

Ranger number-one sat down. Various knick knacks were scattered all over the desk’s surface. There were models of the various oddities from Tazonea, souvenirs, bobble heads, and other kinds of trinkets. Obscuring his view of Mrs. Grunk’s face were stacks of books, pages and maps stacked chaotically together with lopsided carelessness.

Mrs. Grunk reached her arms through the clutter, and swept it all sideways. The skyline of books toppled to the ground with a terrific crash, and pages flew everywhere. With unconcealed indifference to all this, Mrs. Grunk set down a teapot in front of number-one, and quickly followed it up with a chipped little teacup. The stench of cactus grew even stronger. It was sour and repugnant. Mrs. Grunk leaned forward to pour the teapot, her piles of short and curly red hair bobbing about like the folds of fat which covered every inch of her short, stout body.

Anyways, as you may or may not notice, draft number 1 is absolutely horrendous in its quality. It's full of spelling errors, repetition, bad prose, and I keep referring to ranger number-one as "ranger no.1".

Draft number 2 is mildly better, improving some of the flaws, and adding some more sensible lines.

Draft number 3 still isn't "well-written", but it's quite polished in comparison to the first, relatively perfect as far as technical structure goes (I give all the credit to Microsoft Word, of course!) I'm quite excited about how its coming along so far.

I have a very difficult time 'doing' things. It's quite a struggle of mine. I have inclinations, goals, and - more importantly - duties and responsibilities. I struggle to get any of them done, and keep going at them. I'm in prayer about it a lot.

But Tazonea, for once, seems it will be an exception. I set out to write 50,000 words last year, and I did. Furthermore, God-willing, it looks like I'm going to finish it.

So yay! I'm excited. And even though its just a fun kids book, and doesn't carry a Gospel message, Colossians 3:23-24 says,

" And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;
Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ."

God is the chiefest worker of all, for He made creation. Thus, I believe, those who work imitate God in how well they do it, and artists imitate God in their craft. And so, I hope that at the end of even this little project, I can sign my book as the great Bach signed even some of his secular pieces of music:

S.D.G

Which stands for 'Soli Deo Gloria', which means, in the Latin - for the glory of God alone.

Project Glass:Augmented reality is finally coming!!!

Watch, and be amazed. I, for one, got used to all the prattle regarding "augmented reality". But, Google's new  concept called "Project Glass" has made me a believer. Believe me, I'll be first in line to grab a pair of these.

Christian Android Background

I was looking for Christian Android wallpapers the other day for my tablet. I couldn't find any, so I made one myself.

"Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God."

Random Composition

This is the first half decent composition I've made in an amazing music sequencer called FL Studio. They have a very fair demo version, in which they will allow you to save project files and export sound files, but you can't open the project files you save unless you buy the program. As such, this composition was cut short and is half baked. But I thought I'd share it anyways.

Note the dynamics and realistic instruments. There is a great amount of fine and intuitive tweaking you can do in FL studio to make the music just how you like it. In addition to this, you can use "VST's", or Virtual Studio Technology instruments for maximum realistic sound. I do the software no justice, of course. But, take my word for it. This is some powerful software.

You can get the FL studio demo here.

Linux/PC/Mac logo

So, I'm planning on starting a tech blog that caters to users of the three major operating systems. I have a friend who will be the Mac writer, myself (the PC writer), and I don't have a Linux writer yet (comment if you're interested).

So, I made a logo to unify the three operating systems. Drawn in pencil, edited in Adobe Photoshop Elements 9.0

Normal Update

I haven't updated since LAST YEAR!

So, let me recap on what's happened since then.

-I got glasses.

-I got my drivers permit.

-I DROVE!

Firstly,  my glasses are absolutely amazing. I was unaware that I had such poor eyesight. I'm nearsighted, so close up, things look the same. Far away, however, there is an incredible difference. I had accepted the fact that distant objects looked muddled and blurred. However, with the glasses on, they come into unbelievably sharp focus. I really am glad to have them.

I was rather nervous about taking the drivers permit test. In fact, the first time we went, I started feeling noxious while waiting(though this was partly because I hadn't eaten anything that day). I didn't get to take the test that time though since I failed the vision exam.

After getting the glasses, I finally took the test and it turned out that all my worrying was unnecessary. It was a pretty ridiculous test. I think I could have taken it cold turkey and gotten a good number of the questions right. As it stands, I got all of them right. So, great! I got the permit.

Driving for the first time is an amazing experience. From the time you're born, you spend hours and hours in a vehicle's droll hum which becomes distant and abstract in your mind. Trees pass, the car turns, and even though you know better, it almost seems like the car is turning itself and that it could never suddenly veer off course at the whim of its driver.

This fancy is instantly destroyed the moment you buckle your seatbelt and find yourself at the wheel of the car.  Whatever you do controls the entire machine. All four-thousand pounds of it will turn where you turn it and accelerate as fast as a slight push of the shoe bids it. The feeling you get is quite incredible.

I haven't driven on any major roads yet. We live around some rural and nearly abandoned roads with low speed limits and few vehicles. I can't wait to get my license later this year.

Anyways, that's all for now!

Big week

Well, the week has been a pretty eventful one for me. For starters, I bought my first cell phone, the Samsung Galaxy Prevail.

Image use is consistent with United States fair use laws. Please see this page for more info.

It's a prepaid phone on boost mobile. It's on the Android operating system (I have 2.3.5). I've never felt so connected before. With the 3g network, I can be almost anywhere and check emails, text, call, stream music on Rhapsody, etc. I am going to work to pay off the service bills by myself, but I think it's totally worth it.

The phone itself is quite nice. It is usually $150, but it was on sale at Radio Shack for $100. It's got a camera, GPS, WiFi, and a micro-SD slot.

Android is really an amazing mobile OS. The voice recognition is especially incredible. It's so dependable, that I have grown accustomed to using it instead of the keyboard (though I am trying to break the habit, so I can get used to the keyboard).

The other bit of news is that I went to take my driver's permit test today. I was terribly afraid that I wouldn't pass. After waiting almost two hours, it was finally my turn. However, I never even ended up taking my test, because I failed the vision exam. This means that tomorrow, I need to see an eye doctor, who will probably prescribe glasses for me. Apparently, I have 20/40 vision in my left eye.

Well, I don't mind glasses, and I'll probably only have to wear them while driving anyways. Hopefully I'll get my permit soon. I'll probably end up taking it before January 9th.

Well, that wraps it up. Cherio and Happy New Years!

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas to my readers!

I love to celebrate Jesus' birth, and I'm glad we can set aside time for it.

Last night I caroled with my siblings. We have been preparing some music to sing for a few weeks. I got some excellent gifts, including a guide to computer careers, which I look forward to reading.

In other news, I am studying for my drivers permit test this Thursday. I've been waiting to take it since June.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

The Blue Mountains

"[Ranger no.2] passed the time just watching trees and brush go past on the Jeep's right side. Growing bored of this, he eventually turned to the windshield to survey the horizon. It was no longer flat. There were hills now, and curves in the road. But these did nothing to obscure his view of something in the far, far distance. He squinted his eyes to make out the forms of monolithic mounds which were beginning to appear against the sky. They were painted with an entrancing haze of blue which made them difficult to clearly perceive.

'That’s them mate.' Said ranger no.1 in a quiet voice. 'They're something else, aren’t they?'

And ranger no.2 knew at once that he beheld the Australian Blue Mountains."

Tazonea Cover

I know I haven't updated for a while, and I apologize. I haven't abandoned the blog, but I've been taking a bit of a break, with Christmas vacation and everything.

I wanted to share the cool cover that my sister designed for my recent novel, Tazonea. You can click to see the full version.

She's incredible at designing stuff like this, and I think it looks great. I'll be using it when I get a print of my novel after I finish the next draft.

Drawing

After having dedicated a whole month to writing, it seems I've felt like working on my drawing now. I'm always embarrassed practicing this hobby at home, since I'm mediocre at it, and my older sister is exceptionally good.

But, she gives me lessons from time to time, and I try. So, since it's my blog, I may as well.

Here's a couple of things I've made this week. Both were hand drawn and then scanned and colorized/edited in Adobe Photoshop elements 9.0. You can click to see full versions of both.

Grieg van Eichelberger

He's the daytime butler. His older brother, Jack, is the nighttime butler. I drew him too. I don't know what on earth is wrong with this guys shoulders...

I haven't named this guy. He might be the main character from my recent novel when he was young. But I don't know, so I won't say anything for certain. His chin is oddly flat, but I like his hair better than Grieg's.

I'm always drawing heads and torsos, since I can't really draw full bodied characters yet. I'm working on it, though. Hopefully it won't be long before I have some of those to upload too.

Tazonea is done!

I finished my NaNoWriMo novel on the 30th.

WOOT! A great feeling. it came out to 50,253 words, if you count "The End". if you don't, then the word count was 50,251.

Anyways, I might say some more stuff about it later. As you can probably understand, I don't really feel like writing a post about it right now. So, until then!

A Poem

I took some time last night to write a little poem.

Cloud Faith

The yonder cloud
In azul sky
The earth doth shroud
And soothe the eye.

It drifts with ease
And does not know
Where restles breeze
Will make it go.

It does not doubt
Its makers hand
Will guide its route
Through thirsty land

And cause the rain
That poureth out
To heal the plain
And quench the drought.

It isn't there
To simply be;
It has a God
Like you and me.

We are often so tied up in life's worries and affairs, we forget simple faith in God. Those who are saved by the blood of Jesus Christ are the children of God, and can trust him to provide for them and to accomplish his will in their lives.

Matthew 6:25-34 is a relevant passage.

My Novel Grew A Brain

I've read about this fascinating phenomenon before, no doubt from better authors than I, which is probably why it's taken almost 30,000 words for me to notice it.

My novel seems to be developing a mind of its own. In the beginning of the process, there's nothing but a word processor. An indefinite amount of blank space which is the playground for your inspiration; a blank canvas for your painting of words. Well, at first, it's just that: blank. You can go in any direction you want. Even after a few thousand words, the novel seems like soft clay; non-solid and nebulous - able to take practically any different route and ultimately wind up at destinations that are light-years apart.

But, as I've pushed forward these last nineteen days, my novel is solidifying. It is growing stiffer and more colorful at the same time. It's starting to feel more like a real book and less like the putrid babbling which it really is. This is all thanks to the one major characteristic which separates the reader from the writer: unpredictability.

When you read a book, you may have a vague idea where it's going. But, (if it's a good book) your expectations will be thrashed about, and you'll never really know what to expect around the next bend. That's what will keep you reading (again, if it's a good book).

Well, that unpredictability has began to manifest itself in my own novel. All of a sudden, I'm writing about characters I had never conceived during the planning stage. There was an incident too. The main characters were attacked by an animal. I hadn't planned on the attack, but it just seemed like it belonged there. And now, I'm starting to see how this attack might be useful later on. I see some interesting conflict unfolding with one of these new characters that suddenly popped up, and another one of my main characters is stubbornly defying how I had wanted him to turn out, and I've had to reconsider how he, and ultimately the whole book will end.

Indeed, it's as though my novel is gaining a mind of it's own! When I first heard about this happening to others, I laughed to myself. I thought that it could only be the result of a person who really had no good clue what s/he was writing about and why.

Well, I guess I was wrong. I look forward to seeing how this all turns out in the end. About 20k words left to work with, assuming my novel doesn't decide it would rather have 30k, or 50k, or even more.

There are no new stories?

People who insist that there is really no such thing as a new story (only variations on them) are often simply inconfident because they know their work is derivative.

The concept isn't completely wrong. Obviously, every basic story idea has been used before.

However, the difference between a trite piece of rubbish and a brilliant fresh work is that the latter is freshly inspired, and the former is just copied from someone else.

I'm sorry to rant like this, but some people try to mend their insecurities by implying that no work is original work. Therefore, neither is yours, say they. I detest this attitude, which is absolutely wrong.

Even if there are no new concepts, there is always new inspiration.

Work which is not the product of inspiration, but simply a derivative of existing work, deserves to be crushed, burned, and forgotten in the vast landscape of true literary genius.

NaNoWriMo

That's right: NaNoWriMo.

If your wondering how to pronounce it, I think people say "nah-no-rye-moe". Of course, I am in the minority that pronounces it as "nah-no-ree-moe". Apparently that pronunciation annoys a lot of people, but I think it sounds better.

Well, anyways. NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month. The goal of this event, as you may have derived from the title, is writing a novel in a month. A novel, in this case, is 50,000 words (which comes to approximately 1,667 words each day). The month during which this event takes place is November. This month.

I'm taking part in it. There's a book I've wanted to write for a pretty long while, and now seemed a good time to do it. Well, a lot of my friends know what I'm doing, so if I don't finish, much embarrassment will ensue.

I'm on day eight, and have so far written 11,717 words. I'm on target, though I haven't written my words for the day yet. I really should be doing that, and not writing this post.

In fact, I should probably go do it now, so, Adios.

My First Post

Greetings readers!

Actually, I very highly doubt that anyone will end up reading this. I mean, who actually reads the first post on a blog? It probably doesn't matter anyways. I doubt this blog will end up as anything other than inactive.

I'm not pessimistic, it's just that things don't often hold my interest for very long. I have started blogs before, and just can't keep up with them. But, perhaps I have finally realized my mistake. I am a guy of many interests, though I loathe the idea of becoming a jack-of-all-trades. In the past, I have made blogs with strict themes, which I ultimately couldn't keep up with.

Well, this blog won't have a strict theme. It's just about whatever happens to be my flavor of the month, and whatever I happen to be thinking at the time.

Well, I'd better say a few words about myself (if you've gotten this far, I am highly impressed!).

  • I'm a Christian (before anything else)
  • I'm fifteen (as of the time of this post)
  • I'm a guy
  • I play trumpet
  • I play piano
  • I love science
  • I love computers
  • I'm a writer
  • I'm a web developer (not a very good one)
  • I like to play a board game called "go".
  • I'm trying to learn how to draw (I'm terrible).
  • I write music
As you can see, my interests are indeed highly varied. I hope someday I can focus on one interest, and get really good at it.

In the meantime, I'm trying to learn more about God and know him better. That is the most important thing to me, and if I am unsuccessful everywhere else, I hope (and pray) to be successful there. I am born again, which means I have accepted Jesus' sacrifice for my sin. I don't believe my deeds can get me to heaven, but I trust that Jesus can and will. I have a lot of "growing up" up to do as a child of God, though.

Until next time,

          -Noogah
